HIGHLAND TWP. (WWJ) — Two men are in critical condition after their trucks were hit by a falling tree as storms swept through Metro Detroit Wednesday afternoon.
It happened just before 3 p.m. on South Duck Lake Road near Livingston Road in Highland Township, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
A 35-year-old man from Columbus, Ohio, was driving a box truck — which was sub-contracted to the U.S. Postal Service — on South Duck Lake when the storm caused a large tree to break off and land on the cab of the truck, according to the sheriff’s office.
His truck then ran off the west side of the road and crashed into some more trees.
After the tree hit the box truck, it also hit the roof of a Ford F-150 drive by a 23-year-old Highland Twp. man.
Paramedics with the Highland Twp. Fire Department took both men to the hospital. Both men were wearing seatbelts and alcohol did not appear to be a factor.
Authorities have not released any other information about the incident, which remains under investigation.
Western Wayne County was among the hardest hit areas Wednesday as severe weather rolled through the area. In Livonia a 2-year-old boy was killed after a tornado caused a tree to fall on his family's home. In Farmington Hills, high winds brought down a gas station overhang, falling on two cars and causing a gas pump fire.
