YPSILANTI (WWJ) -- Trinity Health Ann Arbor’s Emergency Department will undergo a multimillion dollar renovation and expansion.
Work on the multi-phased project will take three years, beginning later this month and expected to be completed in late 2028.
Construction includes the renovation of 44,600 square feet of both the existing Emergency Department and an adjacent dialysis area, along with an expansion of 13,100 square feet. Officials said the expansion will allow the hospital to better meet Washtenaw County and surrounding communities’ growing needs.
The hospital, which is a Level 1 Trauma Center, will remain open throughout construction.
“As a recognized leader and trusted health care partner, our hospital is committed to responding to the voices of our patients, colleagues and the communities we serve,” Alonzo T. Lewis, President of Trinity Health Ann Arbor, Livingston, Oakland and Livonia, said. “Recently, that feedback has been clear – upgrade our Emergency Department to ensure an appropriate care environment to match the increasing complexity and evolving needs of those that entrust us with their care.”
Work will include increasing the number of private rooms and stretcher bays to expand the department’s capacity. Officials said the hospital will be able to provide the “appropriate patient care setting” by eliminating hallway chairs and stretchers. Overcrowding issues will also be addressed, allowing for a safer, more private environment for both patients and health care providers.
Improved spaces for family members will be incorporated into the design, as will additional staff areas.
The renovated department will feature “flexible spaces,” which will be equipped with advanced technology. An additional CT scanner will also be installed.
The health system announced a new emergency department at Trinity Health Oakland’s campus along Woodward Avenue in 2024. The price for that project is $48 million.
Trinity Health officials said the projects will create more unified emergency care in the area.
“Everyone in our community depends on a strong Emergency Department, one that delivers timely, high-quality care in a setting designed for today’s health care realities,” David Vandenberg, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of Trinity Health Ann Arbor and Trinity Health Livingston, said. “That’s exactly what this project delivers. It’s a win for our patients, their families and our dedicated colleagues who show up every day to provide exceptional care. I commend Alonzo, our Board and Trinity Health for their vision and commitment to providing excellent care. This investment reflects a deep understanding of where health care is, where it is headed and a bold willingness to meet that future head-on.”
Funding for the project comes from designated capital investment funds from both the health system’s national system office and the Ann Arbor hospital and donor support.
