HARRISON TWP. (WWJ) -- Authorities believe an elderly driver who hit and killed a Troy man with his van in Macomb County Monday night was drunk.
According to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office, the fatal crash happened just before 11 p.m. on July 3, in the area of Jefferson Ave. and Cottrell St. in Harrison Township.
Officials said the 47-year-old man was found in a driveway after he was struck by a Ford van while trying to cross Jefferson, just north of Cottrell.
The victim was taken by EMS to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the van, identified as an 84-year-old man, did stay at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to the sheriff's office.
The driver submitted to a field sobriety test and a blood draw, and was arrested.
He was lodged in the Macomb County Jail on a charge of Operating While Impaired Causing Death, the sheriff's office said, but was later released pending further investigation.
Officials said the driver's blood sample was sent to the Michigan State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
Several witnesses were also interviewed, and the van was impounded.
Jefferson Ave. was closed at the scene following the incident, but has since reopened.
No names were immediately released.
