TROY (WWJ) – A Detroit woman is facing multiple felony charges after Troy police caught her in the act of stealing mail.

Khaira Howard has been charged with multiple counts of receiving and concealing property, possession of stolen financial transaction devices and a license violation.

Troy police officers were conducting extra patrols on Monday in a neighborhood near Crooks and Big Beaver Roads, due to numerous complaints of stolen mail, when an officer spotted Howard opening a mailbox and trying to steal mail.

The officer stopped Howard in the act, officials said. Investigators found numerous pieces of mail belonging to Troy residents in her car, along with personal checks and credit cards in the name of other people.

Howard was arraigned on the multiple felony charges on Thursday.

“The Troy Police Department would like to recognize our officers for making this crime trend a priority and patrolling our neighborhoods,” officials said in a press release. “We continue to ask our residents to be vigilant amid a rise in mail theft reports. Stolen mail can lead to identity theft, stolen checks and negatively affect your credit rating.”
