Truck carrying salad dressing crashes into bridge, spilling debris all over I-94 in St. Clair Shores

ST. CLAIR SHORES (WWJ) — A crash involving a semi truck carrying salad dressing led to a big mess and delays on I-94 Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened around 1 p.m. along eastbound I-94 at 9 Mile Road, leaving the freeway backed up in the area. As of 3:45 p.m., only the left lane was open.

WWJ Traffic Reporter Scott Ryan says while traffic is able to exit the freeway at 9 Mile, drivers should consider Harper or Gratiot as alternate routes to get around the mess.

MDOT officials said a truck crashed into the bridge, spilling debris all over the freeway.

MDOT confirmed to WWJ the jugs that were spilled all over the freeway were salad dressing, but it was not immediately clear what caused the crash.

WWJ's Tony Ortiz spoke with traffic tipster Chris, who said the mess initially looked like it was drywall and cinder blocks, along with small pieces of metal strewn across I-94, all of which drivers were trying to avoid.

"It looked like he wandered off or something forced him to go over and that column just missed the passenger door and hit the box and just sliced it right off," Chris said.

MDOT photos show the metal side of the truck came off and was resting against the bridge.

"The truck is about 200 feet further forward, it took a little more time to stop. The right side of the truck, which is all usually aluminum, was just all wrinkled up and up on the other side of the columns," Chris said.

MDOT did not have an estimated time for when the crash may be cleared.
