(WWJ) When last in Michigan, the night before the 2020 election, then-President Donald Trump joked to a Grand Rapids rally crowd that he would never come back if he lost.

But, according to reports, Trump is making plans to return to the Great Lakes state in the coming weeks to campaign for a Republican hopeful for State Attorney General.

When Trump attended a fundraiser for candidate Matthew DePerno he said he'll be back in the state "soon." DePerno's camp said the visit will come before the Republican delegates meet next month to choose candidates for AG, and the Secretary of State, among other races.

According to a report by The Detroit News, DePerno said most Republicans he talks to believe Trump is still the leader of the GOP and want to see him run for president again. DePerno said the plan is for Trump's visit to occur before the April 23 convention.

"It will give the president the opportunity to speak to some of the delegates directly at a rally and tell them directly that he believes ... I am the person who has the best chance to beat Dana Nessel in November," DePerno said, according to the newspaper.

There is no word at this time as to what city in Michigan Trump might visit, or whether the event may be open to the public.
