GARDEN CITY (WWJ) Two elementary schools were forced into lockdown in Garden City following an armed 'road rage race.'

Police said Memorial, in the area of Ford and Middlebelt, and Lathers, in the area of Inkster and Ford, locked down shortly before the end of the school day. Both schools are on Marquette St.

School officials decided to do so amid an armed 'road rage race' following a hit and run at Middlebelt and Marquette. That's only approximately three blocks from Lathers, and only approximately a block from Memorial.

WDIV reported two cars--each with two people inside--were firing at one another and speeding following a road rage incident. They struck a driver in a Jeep who was not involved in the incident. Afterward, the suspects drove away from the scene and did their best to evade police.

The condition of the driver in the Jeep is unclear.

Many parents were already at the school to pick up their children when the lockdown went into effect, according to WDIV.

In a letter sent home to parents, the schools wrote: "While there is no immediate threat of harm, traffic in and out of the school is suspended to support the safety of the students and the staff."

No injuries were reported. The lockdown was lifted at 4:30 p.m. Police took the four suspects into custody.
