DETROIT (WWJ) -- A late-night shooting during a weekend block party on Detroit's east side left two dead and 19 injured, with one person currently in critical condition.

The violence erupted just before 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 7 in a neighborhood on the 13000 block of Rossini at Reno, near Schoenherr between 7 Mile and 8 Mile roads.

In a statement on X; Michigan State Police said they were called to assist with a shooting through a partnership with their Homicide Task Force where "preliminary investigations (shows) there are 19 victims with various injuries and two fatal victims."

Monday afternoon Detroit Police Chief James White identified the victims who were killed as a 21-year-old Detroit man and a 20-year-old Detroit woman. In total, six men and 15 women were hit by the gunfire.

DPD officials said they will be "implementing a comprehensive new strategy regarding block parties," and will brief the police chief and mayor on Monday.

City Council President Mary Sheffield described the victims as "21 young people, average age of 19."

"We must chart a new course of action, and I'm calling for an all-hands-on-deck approach to ending the senseless killings and destruction of families in our community," she said in her statement. "My heart and prayers go out to the victims and their loved ones."

As of Monday morning, residents of the neighborhood had started speaking out about the situation, with one person telling WWJ's Charlie Langton that the shooting was like "a war zone."

No one is in custody at this time, according to State Police. Officials at Monday's press conference did not release any information about possible suspects or a motive in the shooting.
