OAK PARK (WWJ)— Two Oak Park students were injured in a shooting during a homecoming football game at Oak Park High School against Ferndale.

The school district said the shooting took place Friday night in the parking lot of Oak Park High School, on Oak Park Blvd. near Coolidge Highway, with about six minutes remaining in the game.

Oak Park Public Safety Officers said they responded to a possible fight around 8:15 p.m. Upon arrival, officers heard multiple gunshot wounds and saw students running away in all directions.

They could not find the victims, but recovered shell casings at the scene.

Officers were later contacted and learned two students who had been shot were driven to a local hospital for treatment, according to police.

They are in stable condition. Their ages were not released.

“Currently, an ongoing investigation is underway to gather more details about this unfortunate incident,” the school district said in a letter to families, obtained by WXYZ-Channel 7. “We remain committed to upholding transparency in our communication with our families and the Oak Park community. As we receive updates throughout the course of the investigation, we will keep you informed every step of the way.”

In the letter, the school district encouraged parents to monitor their children’s texts, social media accounts, and phone calls “as a means of assessing their social and emotional well-being.”

“Despite their growing independence,” the school district wrote, “high school students still rely on the support of their parents.”

Police have released no information about the suspect. However, WXYZ-Channel 7 reports he or she was not a student at the school.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Oak Park Public Safety Investigation Bureau at (248) 691-7511 or (248) 691-7513.
