WHITE LAKE TWP. (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway in northern Oakland County where two teenagers were shot in the early morning hours Tuesday.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Jon Hewett reported one of the teens has died, while the other was hospitalized following the shooting in White Lake Township at around 1 a.m. on July 8.
According to White Lake Township Police, the shooting happened at a home on Mandon Road, where a group of teens was confronted by a resident with a gun.
According to Lt. Matthew Ivory, who briefed Hewett and other reporters, the teens had broken into a garage.
"Seven individuals had broke into a detached garage at a residence. The homeowner was alerted through his surveillance system, at which point the homeowner came out and confronted the individuals," Ivory said.
The homeowner opened fire, shooting two of the teens before the group fled on foot.
The wounded teens went on the run through multiple backyards, hopping fences and leaving a bloody trail.
The teens then drove away, ending up on a residential street in nearby Commerce Township where one of them died of his injuries. The other wounded teen was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, Ivory said.
Both of the teens who were shot were 17 years old, according to police.
Two other teens were arrested: one 18 years old and one under 18. The juvenile was turned over to the custody of his parents.
As of late Tuesday afternoon, Ivory said police were still searching for the other three teens involved.
As for the homeowner, the police department will work with the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office regarding any potential charges.
