COMMERCE TOWNSHIP (WWJ) Police believe two teens or pre-teens are responsible for a rash of overnight package thefts in Commerce Township.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said the overnight thefts reportedly occur between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. Residents reported the thefts in the Mount Royal suburb in the area of S. Commerce and W. Commerce Roads, and the alleged thieves have targeted at least three homes.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard told WWJ the kids appear to be middle school or early high school age.

"We actually have obtained a picture, potentially a very good picture of at least the first one and maybe the second one as well," Sheriff Bouchard said. "I guess my message is, if you live in that area and have kids, make sure you talk to your kids."

Sheriff Bouchard says residents can protect their packages by getting a camera, communicating with delivery drivers and taking the parcel inside the moment it's delivered. The Sheriff's Office has increased patrols in the area.

Although the suspects are young, they could face serious charges, depending on the value of the packages.

"It's illegal and it's criminal," Bouchard said. "And it could them into serious trouble. To the youngsters who are involved in this, they need to tell their parents and turn themselves in."
