Uber driver killed in suspected drunk driving crash in Oak Park; 1 in custody

On the scene, they found a 23-year-old man on the ground and two cars with heavy damage. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Inside a Buick Envision, was a driver who had to be extradited from the car by firefighters. He later died in the hospital, police said.

Police learned that the the 23-year-old man was the back-seat passenger of the Envision, and the driver was working for the ride sharing service Uber.

The other vehicle involved was a Dodge Charger, driven by a 19-year-old man, that allegedly drove through a red traffic light and cause the crash. The Charger driver suffered minor injuries, police said, and his 18-year-old female passenger was not hurt.

Police said investigates that the Charger driver was intoxicated, and that that was a factor in the crash. He was arrested at the scene.

A couple of hours later, at around 1 a.m., officers with Berkley Public Safety (BDPS) were assisting Oak Park officers at the scene of the crash.

BDPS said one of its officers was helping to direct traffic on 8 Mile when a vehicle crashed into a patrol car.

The driver of that vehicle as arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, with a blood alcohol concentration three times the legal limit.

Expected charges are pending against both of the drivers in custody.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic crash,” said Steve Cooper, director of the Department of Public Safety. “We urge drivers to slow down, never drive under the influence, eliminate distractions, buckle up, and remain attentive to pedestrians and others sharing the roadway. Safe driving requires constant focus and responsible decision-making. A few simple choices can save lives and help keep our community safe.”
