Utility poles snapped by wind gusts, downed telecom service lines stop traffic on Ryan Road on Wednesday

WARREN (WWJ) -- High winds were responsible for snapping multiple utility poles in two, bringing traffic to a halt in Warren on Wednesday.

Drivers were asked to avoid the area of Ryan Rd. between 10 Mile Rd. and Frazho in Warren, which was closed for several hours due to downed lines in the roadway.

Warren Police said police and fire crews were on scene, beginning late in the morning, directing traffic until the hazard could be safely cleared.

Reporting from the scene at noon, WWJ Newsradio 950's Jon Hewett said as many as a dozen utility poles were snapped in half, and lying on the ground.

"So I'm assuming — after one went, with the tension on the lines — they came down potentially like a set of dominoes," Hewett said.

DTE Energy says the lines that came down were in fact not power lines, but telecom service delivery lines.

There is a Wind Advisory in effect for Metro Detroit, from 10 a.m. Wednesday until 4 a.m. Thursday — and authorities do believe it was a strong wind gust that snapped the poles.

No injuries were reported.

Ryan Rd. has since reopened to traffic.

The public is reminded never touch or approach downed lines.
