DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit Police are warning against vandals that could be putting themselves in danger.

Over the weekend, authorities said a group of intruders broke a large portion of the fence surrounding the former Cooley High School, on the city's northwest side.

They also destroyed the seal covering the entrance to the crumbling and dilapidated building, which is destined to be demolished.

A spokesperson for the Detroit Public Schools Community District said the fence has been repaired, and there will now be 24-hour security on-site until it is completely demolished.

In a statement, a DPSCD spokesperson said: "The former Cooley High School building remains closed to the public, and unauthorized entry is prohibited. The District continues to prioritize the safety of the surrounding community and will work closely with law enforcement and demolition partners to secure the site throughout the demolition process. Violators of the building risk their own safety by entering the grounds and building and will be prosecuted if apprehended."

Located at Hubbell Ave. and Chalfonte St., Cooley High School opened in 1928. It served as a major educational and athletic anchor in the community for over eight decades until low enrollment and budget constraints forced the district to close it in 2010.

WWJ's Charlie Langton reports that some alumni and community groups had sought to save the historic building, but the cost to renovate was just too high.

There have been no arrests in connection with the vandalism, and no suspects have been described.
