CLINTON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Police are searching for a pair of vandals after they allegedly destroyed playground equipment at a Clinton Twp. elementary school over the 4th of July weekend.

Clinton Township police said the play area at Erie Elementary School was vandalized between July 3rd and July 4th by two young males and they are searching for the perpetrators.

The structure is reportedly unusable due to the damage.

Residents in the area expressed their outrage online with some saying the destruction could’ve been caused by fireworks.

“We saw the damage the other day,” one social media user commented. “It looked like a firework hit it …. So sad that there are jerks like this that ruin things for people. That was a great piece of equipment now the whole thing is unsafe.”

“I will never understand behavior like this,” another poster wrote. “When I was a teen, destroying property was never on my agenda.”

Images shared to WWJ by Amy Williams showed large sections of the structure that were singed and blackened. Plastic making up the slide and other play areas were almost completely melted away.

“My children go to school there and are quite upset,” Williams said. “This is the playground for 1st-5th grade and was just built in the summer of 2020.”

Clinton Twp. police shared a photo of the two suspects to their social media in an attempt to identify the men. Anyone with information about the incident has been asked to contact Det. Neil Stafford at 586-493-7842.
