(WWJ) It was a close call for Livingston County Sheriff's deputies whose patrol car was hit by a suspected drunk driver.
A video released by the sheriff's office on Monday shows the deputies on an Aug. 14 traffic stop, along US-23 near Clyde Road, talking with a driver when another car speeding by smashed into their SUV.
The deputies and driver who was stopped weren't hurt, the sheriff's office said.
The sheriff's SUV had damage to the back, as seen in images shared by the department.
Officials sad the driver who hit the patrol vehicle was arrested for drunk driving and had a blood alcohol level officials said was more than twice the state's legal limit.
Livingston County is among those local departments involved in the ongoing "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" enforcement campaign that wraps up on Labor Day.
The sheriff's office said this incident is a stark reminded that impaired driving doesn't just put the driver at risk — it endangers everyone on our roads, including the first responders working to keep our community safe.
"When you choose to drive impaired, you're making a decision that can change lives forever. Tonight, we were fortunate. Tomorrow, someone else might not be," the sheriff's office wrote in a social media post, along with the video. "Make the right choice. Plan ahead. Call a ride. Save lives."
