(WWJ) – There’s a "budding friendship" at the Detroit Zoo.
A video of a silverback gorilla petting a groundhog in the gorilla habitat has gone viral.
While zoo officials say it’s not uncommon to see a groundhog “poking around the gorilla habitat during feeding time” -- both species are herbivores, after all -- a less common sight was caught on camera by Alex Phillips, a visitor at the zoo.
The 23-year-old silverback named Kongo is seen gently stroking a groundhog on the back.
“Even though gorillas weigh more than 400 pounds, this little visitor seems to realize that Kongo, a 23-year-old silverback, doesn’t mean any harm.”
The video posted to the Detroit Zoo’s Facebook page had been shared more than 700 times and racked up over 15,000 views in less than an hour on Thursday.
It had also garnered thousands of videos elsewhere on social media and Reddit.
