VIDEO: Police converge on handcuffed man who escaped custody after exam at Detroit Receiving Hospital

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Police swarmed to the scene, late Thursday morning, to re-arrest a man who escaped custody outside a local hospital.

Video by WWJ Newsradio 950's Mike Campbell shows more than a dozen officers surrounding the young man, who was handcuffed when police say he ran off after undergoing a medical review at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Detroit Police Captain Mathew Bray told Campbell and other reporters the 22-year-old has a lengthy rap sheet, including a history of violent crime.

Early in the morning of April 17, Bray said the man was taken into custody by Eighth Precinct Officers from the Special Operations Unit for a weapons offense.

"Once making that arrest, the individual that was involved in that arrest did attempt to assault the police officers," Bray said. "A separate unit then conveyed that individual to the Detroit Detention Center for housing, at which point that individual assaulted officers at the Detroit Detention Center."

After his scuffle with officers, the man was taken to the hospital to be looked over, Bray said.

"Upon leaving that medical clearance, the arrestee escaped police custody, and fled on foot from the location."

Bray said Detroit police tracked down and recaptured the arrestee within an hour, outside some apartments on St. Antoine, between Canfield and E. Warren Ave.

The suspect was taken back to the Detroit Detention Center where he awaits an arraignment on additional charges. His name was not immediately released.
