Detroit Police under fire as video of woman dancing on patrol car goes viral

DETROIT (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway to determine if Detroit Police officers did the right thing when a woman jumped on a patrol car and started dancing during a weekend party.

The officers were working crowd control at a large gathering on the city’s east side when the woman climbed onto the roof of one of the SUV cruisers.

A video that has since gone viral shows that the officers allowed the woman to dance, and then get off the car, instead of trying to stop her or arresting her for disorderly conduct.

Interim Detroit Police Chief James White said in a press conference that he stands by the officers, and says they made the right decision.

"What’s frustrating for me is to read that the officers didn’t do anything," White said. "They did exactly what we are asking them to do: practice restraint."

"Had they driven off with this young lady on the very top of the car dancing, had they drove off and she rolled off and was injured, then I would be asking the question, 'Was that the right decision to make?'" he added.

White says that there should be responsibility placed on citizens to self-police their behavior for mutual accountability between the public and authorities.

DPD is currently investigating to ensure that the officer followed all department policies in the situation.
