(WWJ) — Two kayakers are home safe after being rescued by the Coast Guard late Tuesday night.

The Coast Guard launched a helicopter crew Tuesday night after Air Station Detroit and Sector Detroit got reports of two men who had been kayaking and were overdue returning to the Tawas area.

The helicopter crew searched near the shoreline of Charity Island — located in Saginaw Bay about halfway between Caseville and Whitestone Point — and eventually found the kayakers, who had become stranded.

Video released by the Coast Guard shows the men being lifted to the helicopter from the island.

The crew brought the two men to Wurtsmith Air Base in Iosco County. There, they were transferred to a local EMS crew. They were reported to be in stable condition.

“This was a team effort and I’d like to commend the coordination from Sector Detroit and our crews. This is what we train for, and we are glad we got to bring these men home safely,” said Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Smith, the Helicopter Aircraft Commander.

Officials did not say what caused the men to become stranded or how long they had been there. The kayakers' ages and hometowns were not disclosed.
