WARREN (WWJ) -- A candlelight vigil was held last night in Warren near the intersection where a 5-year-old boy was killed by a hit-and-run driver earlier this week.
Around 200 family members and friends gathered at the corner of Van Dyke and Stephens to honor and remember the life of Preston Singleton.
The vigil came just several hours after 22-year-old Maurice Sumler was formally charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death.
Warren police say Sumler was late for work on Tuesday evening when he ran a red light at the intersection and hit the little boy, who was riding his bike.
Following the crash, Sumler fled the scene, heading northbound on Van Dyke. Police discovered his vehicle in a Taco Bell parking lot and located the suspect at a nearby gas station, where he was taken into custody.
A GoFundMe account for Preston’s family has raised more than $27,000.
