FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) - A 40-year-old Troy man is dead after troopers say he attempted to pass a semi truck in his vehicle before a lane closure on I-696, but crashed and rolled over into a ditch.
Michigan State Police is currently on site and have shut down all westbound lanes of I-696 at the ramp to I-96 near Halstead Road while they investigate the crash.
Troopers said they were called out to the area just before 6 a.m., where upon arrival, fire crews were working to free a 40-year-old man from Troy trapped in a rolled over vehicle.
After he was removed from the wreck, officials pronounced him dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation by troopers revealed the deceased driver was at fault and was attempting to pass a semi truck when he crashed.
"The roadway was in a construction area and the left lane was closed merging traffic to the right," troopers said. "The at fault driver attempted to pass the semi before the lane closure, merged to the right, crashed into the semi then rolled over into the right ditch."
Traffic moving westbound is being forced off to southbound I-275 and M-5 until further notice.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned to WWJ LIVE for the latest updates.
