DETROIT (WWJ) – A stretch of I-94 in Detroit has reopened after a more than two-hour closure following a shooting involving Warren police on Thursday afternoon.
The freeway had been closed in both directions between I-75 and the Lodge Freeway since around 3 p.m., but reopened around 5:45 p.m., though there were still residual backups in the area during the evening rush hour.
It started as a police chase around 2:40 p.m. when the suspect fled officers attempting a traffic stop in the area of 8 Mile and Gratiot, according to Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer.
About a mile into the chase, the suspect hit multiple patrol cars.
The chase came to an end after the suspect hit the median wall and intentionally rammed other drivers' cars along westbound I-94 near Woodward.
Shots were then fired by a Warren police officer as they attempted to arrest the suspect, who was eventually taken to the hospital in serious condition. It was not immediately clear whether the armed suspect fired shots.
One Warren police officer suffered a non-fatal injury.
Officials have not released any other details about the initial traffic stop or the suspect's identity.
