WARREN (WWJ) - A driver at the center of a crash investigation along I-696 in Metro Detroit is behind bars after troopers found he had a loaded pistol, but no gun license and no car insurance early Tuesday morning.
Michigan State Police said troopers from their North Metro Post were called out to a blocking crash around 5: 15 a.m. on I-696 in Warren on Sept. 26 and came in contact with a driver, identified as a 30-year-old man from Madison Heights.
As troopers investigated, they discovered a loaded 9 mm SCCY Industries pistol on the front passenger-side floorboard. MPS said troopers verified that the driver, who was also the lone occupant in the vehicle, did not have a Concealed Pistol License (CPL).
In addition, troopers also found out that the man's vehicle also had no insurance on it.
The man was arrested and lodged, MSP added. Charges are currently pending a review with the prosecutor's office.
MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw praised troopers with cracking down on illegal firearms.
"We are continuing to see illegal guns taken off our streets by troopers not only during traffic stops but in other investigations," Shaw said. "Another great job by the Metro North troops keeping our communities safe."
