Detroit man in critical condition after intervening as Warren man fought with girlfriend, leading to shooting in driveway

(WWJ) — A Warren man could face up to life in prison for shooting another man who tried to intervene when he got into a fight with his girlfriend.

Derrick King, 37, was arraigned Monday on seven felony charges — including attempted murder and carrying a concealed weapon — and charged as a habitual third offender.

The victim, a 24-year-old Detroit man, was listed in critical condition on Monday, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office.

It all started when King allegedly got into an altercation with his girlfriend at a party in Detroit, according to the prosecutor's office. The victim intervened and began fighting with King before the girlfriend yelled that King may have been holding her gun.

After the fight was broken up, the girlfriend went to the home she shares with King and stayed in her car as King drove up on his motorcycle. A short time later, according to the prosecutor's office, the victim pulled in front of the house and got out of his car while King was still standing in his driveway.

King and the victim again started fighting. Authorities say as the victim began backing away after the two separated, King allegedly fired 12 shots, hitting the victim multiple times.

Authorities have not said whether the victim and suspect knew each other prior to the alleged fights. Officials did not say whether the woman was injured.

"The alleged twelve shots fired at an unarmed man walking away, shows a total disregard for human life. We will not tolerate this behavior in Macomb County," Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido said, per a press release.

King was charged with assault with intent to murder, CCW, three counts of felony firearm, prohibited person in possession of a firearm and prohibited person in possession of ammunition. Bond was set at $300,000 cash/surety, no 10%.

If released, he must wear a GPS tether and have no contact with the victim. King's next court date is scheduled for April 16.
