HOLLY TWP. (WWJ) -- A 29-year old mother from Warren has died after she was hit by a truck in a grocery store parking lot in northern Oakland County.
Michigan State Police said the woman was hit while she was standing by the side of her Ford Explorer around 6:30 p.m. Sunday outside Alex's Market and Grill, at Grange Hall and Mackey roads in Holly.
Police said the victim was holding her 1-year-old daughter while either putting another child into her vehicle or taking them out.
MSP said a preliminary investigation found the driver of a commercial-grade Ford pickup truck pulled out of the parking spot next to the Explorer, and hit the woman still holding her child, running over both of them.
Despite life-saving efforts, woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials said the 1-year-old girl had non-life threatening injuries.
Police believe impaired driving my have been factor.
The 72-year-old truck driver was arrested at the scene, and that his blood was drawn to test for drug use, according to MSP. Results are pending.
MSP said the investigation is ongoing. Once complete, the report will be submitted to the prosecutor's office.
“This investigation is still pending other evidence, medical examiner reports and results from the search warrant,” said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw.
“It does appear at this time that impaired driving is the cause of this crash. While many drivers are aware of the impacts of alcohol while driving, we continue to remind drivers the same is true for drug impairment. It does not matter if they are prescribed drugs, marijuana or over the counter, they all impact your ability to drive.”
