WARREN (WWJ) – Not everything is what it seems.

The Warren Police Department put out an alert today – reminding parents, guardians and the community to stay vigilant during the Halloween season.

The alert comes after a recent investigation discovered items resembling candy and chips, which actually contained THC and psilocybin mushroom products.

Warren Police detectives executed a search warrant at a home on Thursday (Oct. 23) as part of an ongoing investigation. Their officers discovered several bags of chips, snacks and candy that appeared to be in standard packaging.

When detectives looked closer, they saw that many of the items contained THC, while others contained psilocybin mushroom products. The packaging made these products look like regular, well-known candies and snacks.

Some of the candies include Nerds Rope, Airheads and Jolly Rancher Gummies.

"We're grateful to have removed these items before they could fall into the hands of children,” said Warren Police Commissioner Eric Hawkins. “This serves as an important reminder for families to carefully inspect all Halloween treats and to prioritize safety this season.”

The Warren Police Department reminds all trick-or-treaters to wait to eat their candy until they get home and reminds parents to inspect candy before allowing kids to eat them.

Other suggestions include throwing away anything that is unwrapped, loose or homemade.
