NORTHFIELD TWP. (WWJ) – Authorities say the cause of a home explosion that claimed four lives and injured two others over the holiday weekend will remain under investigation for several more days.
An explosion rocked a home on Winters Lanes in Washtenaw County’s Northfield Township — between Ann Arbor and Whitmore Lake — around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
Three people were found dead at the scene, while three others were taken to the hospital in critical condition. One victim was pronounced dead Saturday, while the two others remained hospitalized Sunday, officials said in an update.
Authorities have not yet identified any of the victims, as of Sunday afternoon.
The cause of the explosion remains unknown, and Northfield Township Fire Department officials said Sunday the investigation “will continue for several days.”
More than 10 police and fire departments responded to the scene Saturday, where they found the single-family home to be “completely destroyed with a debris field covering approximately 2 acres of the property.”
Investigators were still working the scene Sunday morning. Officials said there was “a tremendous amount of vehicle traffic” on Winters Lane, which was hindering the investigation. Authorities are now telling the public that Winters, which is a private road, is only open to residents and their guests until further notice.
“We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the victim’s families during this difficult time,” Lt. David Powell said in a statement.
