DETROIT (WWJ) – Wayne State University has suspended a professor over a social media post the school’s president says is “at best, morally reprehensible and, at worst, criminal.”

The English professor -- who has not been identified -- allegedly wrote on social media that “rather than ‘shouting down’ those with whom we disagree, one would be justified to commit murder to silence them,” according to a statement from President Roy Wilson.

School officials say the situation has been referred to police for further review and investigation. Pending investigation and law enforcement review, the professor has been suspended with pay, effective immediately.

“We have on many occasions defended the right of free speech guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, but we feel this post far exceeds the bounds of reasonable or protected speech. It is, at best, morally reprehensible and, at worst, criminal,” Wilson’s statement said.

It was not immediately clear when the social media post was made, or which platform was used. The entirety of the post has not been made clear.
