DETROIT (WWJ) Crews have reopened westbound I-94 in Detroit after flooding left it steeped in torrents of water last weekend, in some places up to 10 feet deep.
The affected area is from I-96 to Michigan Avenue. The eastbound side will remain closed for the time being.
"The eastbound side, unfortunately, we have to keep closed for more than a week or so. We have some extensive damage on the roadway from having all the flood damage sit there for almost four days," MDOT's Diane Cross said live on WWJ.
Eastbound I-96 is expected to open sometime after the 4th of July holiday, according to Cross. Still, Cross said she's happy about the progress.
"We're very excited to have westbound open."
Michigan State Police told WWJ last weekend that "thousands" of cars were submerged the standing water on I-94 and dive teams had to be activated to make sure no one was beneath the water. Fortunately, no deaths were reported.
Up to 7 inches of rain hit Detroit Friday going into Saturday.
