(WWJ) — A Westland man could spend a year behind bars after being convicted of a box truck crash that killed two women earlier this year.

This week 33-year-old Jose Medina-Hernandez was found guilty of two counts of moving violation causing death, both one-year misdemeanors, Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido announced Thursday.

The conviction comes six months after Medina-Hernandez was driving a box truck on M-53 when he rear-ended a Buick Verano, triggering a pileup involving two other vehicles. Both people in the Buick — 88-year-old Nancy Richmond and 63-year-old Crystal Brunn — were killed in the crash.

“Thank you to the Macomb County jury who delivered justice for the families who lost their loved ones in this tragic and preventable crash. Our hearts remain with the victims’ families as they continue to heal from this devastating loss," Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido said, per a press release.

Assistant Prosecutors Mark Stepek and Christopher Urban tried the case in Shelby Township District Court.

The prosecutor's office did not release a date for Medina-Hernandez's sentencing.
