(WWJ) Cyclists and pedestrians will finally be able to cross the Gordie Howe International Bridge next week.
The Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority says the multi-use path on the bridge will open Wednesday, August 5th. During the summer, people can ride or walk the path seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the last entry at 7 p.m. All use of the path is free.
The estimated time to bike the bridge is around 20 minutes, while walking takes around 45 minutes, according to officials. The Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority says it will also limit how many people are on the bridge at once the first few days, so crossers should expect some delays.
If you plan to cross the bridge, remember:
- Prepare all documents necessary to cross the border before entering either the U.S. or Canada.
- Parking is available at the Clark Park trailhead in Detroit and at the Malden Park trailhead in Windsor. There is no on-site parking at either port of entry.
- All cyclists must bike at speeds under 12 miles per hour(20 kilometers per hour). Bikes that can exceed over 32 miles per hour are prohibited. Likewise, e-bikes are not allowed on the path for the first few weeks due to safety concerns.
- Pets are prohibited while on the path. However, properly identified service animals are allowed while on a leash.
- Skateboards, roller-skates, in-line skates, electric scooters, segway, hoverboards, and one wheels are all prohibited. (see a complete list)

The Gordie Howe International Bridge officially opened to vehicle traffic on July 27. The $6.4 billion project is the first Windsor-Detroit crossing to open in 60 years.
