(WWJ) -- Gov. Gretchen Whitmer says all remaining COVID-19 restrictions may be lifted sooner than the July 1 date her administration had put in place earlier this spring.
Whitmer said Wednesday the rollback of the state’s broad mask and gatherings mandate may come sooner than anticipated, as she said her administration has been happy with the number of Michiganders receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
“Over 60 percents of adults in Michigan, actually 16 year olds and up, have been vaccinated, and thanks to this rollout and to all the Michiganders who have gotten their shot, we’re looking forward to the next rollback in the coming days. It’s scheduled for July 1, but I think you should stay tuned,” Whitmer said.
The hint of a sooner-than-expected return to normal comes on the same day state health officials reported just 179 new cases of COVID-19 -- the lowest one-day count since last June.
The state peeled back a majority of restrictions on June 1, removing all outdoor capacity restrictions and increasing indoor limits to 50%, with face masks no longer required for vaccinated individuals.
Plans called for lifting all remaining restrictions on July 1, unless any “unexpected circumstances” came about.
The governor did not say what day the restrictions may be lifted.
