DETROIT (WWJ) – Tens of thousands of people headed downtown on Thursday for an unofficial Detroit holiday – Tigers Opening Day.

Among those celebrating the return of baseball season was Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who shared a video of her helping the Tigers’ grounds crew get the field ready at Comerica Park.

“The field is in tip-top shape for today’s game,” Whitmer said in a tweet. “Whether you’re enjoying an Oberon at the ballpark or at home: be safe, have fun, and Go Tigers!”

The video shows Whitmer dragging the infield and warning track, rolling the area around home plate and the pitcher’s mound and placing the bases, which have increased in size significantly this season.

“Thank goodness I didn’t screw up the field,” she said.

The Tigers dropped the home opener against the Red Sox, 6-3, falling to 2-5 on the young season.

Prior to the game, Miguel Cabrera joined Detroit sports legends Ben Wallace, Calvin Johnson and Nicklas Lidstrom in throwing out the ceremonial first pitches. This will be the final season of Cabrera’s illustrious career.
