DETROIT (WWJ) -- Metro Detroiters enjoyed a gorgeous, springlike day on Monday in Metro Detroit, with highs reaching around 70°. But the nice weather was, unfortunately, just a blip.
AccuWeather says some strong to severe thunderstorms are on the way to Southeast Michigan starting Tuesday night, and we're going to see some snow later this week.
Tuesday morning, Metro Detroit was seeing cloudy skies and some drizzle in spots.
Unfortunately, AccuWeather Meteorologist Joe Lundberg said there is some concern about what they're seeing on radar — especially after the deadly tornadoes that hit Michigan last Friday.
Lundberg said severe weather in Michigan is "exceedingly rare" this time of the year.
"I mean, we just saw a warm front just sneak into the southern part of the state, just far enough north that we got into the warm air mass. And it produced some violent thunderstorms that produced those tornadoes and that affected Union City," Lundberg said.
"And really, it, you know, all the way back to almost the northern Indiana border and all of these are going to be....EF2, EF3 tornadoes. We just don't see that at this time of the year."
Lundberg said the risk for strong thunderstorms and other severe weather in Metro Detroit starts later Tuesday.
The National Weather Service says scattered severe storms are possible Tuesday evening into early Wednesday morning. Damaging wind, large hail, heavy rainfall, and a tornado are all possible, NWS said.
"I'm concerned about the threat for tornadoes sneaking into southern Michigan again," Lundberg agreed, warning that the southernmost parts of the state are again most at risk for severe weather.
The high in Detroit on Tuesday will reach 62°, before dropping to a low of 47° overnight.
Total rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected, although locally higher amounts are possible. Watch out for some localized flash flooding.
On Wednesday, Metro Detroit will see more rain and a breeze with another thunderstorm possible, and a high again of around 62°.
AccuWeather says the rain could turn into snow overnight Wednesday, when the temp drops way down to around 28°. Metro Detroit could see about an inch of snow accumulation overnight.
Then on Thursday, AccuWeather says Metro Detroit could see a little but more accumulation, with a mix of snow and rain, with a high of 43° and lows in the 30s.
