(WWJ) James and Jennifer Crumbley are the first parents in American history to be charged in connection with a mass shooting carried out by their child.

On a new Daily J podcast, WWJ's Zach Clark takes a look at what lies ahead for both parents of convicted Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crumbley, who is appealing his sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Opening arguments are set to begin Thursday after a jury was seated Wednesday for the trial of Jennifer Crumbley, whose son learned his sentence last month after pleading guilty to the November 2021 shooting that claimed four lives and injured six students and a teacher.

Both parents have been charged with involuntary manslaughter. WWJ Legal Analyst Charlie Langton says, in part, the mother's defense team plans to argue her husband was the one who bought the gun for their then-15-year-old son. Her son is not expected to testify in the trial.

Prosecutors argue the parents didn't do enough to stop the killing spree, ignoring signs of mental health struggles and providing him with the gun.

James Crumbley's trial is scheduled for March.
