SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- Expect whipping winds as you start your week in Metro Detroit — with power outages possible ahead of some snow, according to forecasters.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has extended a Wind Advisory for all of Metro Detroit and southeastern Michigan, now in effect until 11 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27.
NWS forecasters predict winds of 20 to 35 mph, with gusts expected to peak at 45-55 mph.
Oakland, Macomb, Wayne and Washtenaw Counties are all under the advisory— as well as Bay, Genesee, Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Midland, Monroe, Saginaw, and Shiawassee Counties.
"As we go through the mid to late-morning hours, you're gonna notice a definite increase in those winds speeds," said WWJ AccuWeather Meteorologist Joe Lundberg. "And by lunchtime and beyond, it'll be sustained 15 to 25 (mph), and some gusts will be in the 40 to 45 mile per hour range. Now that will carry us for the rest of the day, into the early part of tonight."
The winds could displace unsecured objects, like trash cans, or take down tree branches. Power outages may result, the NWS said.
The NWS also urges you to use extra caution while driving— as the high winds can make it more difficult.
Lundberg said the winds will back down when a front comes through later Monday night, bringing some snow showers that could turn heavy at times.
"In fact, you might even call them a squall," Lundberg said. "Enough that they can lay down a quick coating to an inch of snow, cause very slippery travel and reduce visibility when they hit, an then they go away."
Lundberg said the snow overnight may be enough to make for a slippery Tuesday morning commute in Metro Detroit.
Tuesday afternoon, he said there could be another snow shower. Wednesday, AccuWeather is calling for another windy day with some snow possible.
All week, Metro Detroit is looking at highs in the 30s.
