DEARBORN HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- A woman is dead and a man is in the hospital after what police are calling a "domestic-related" shooting in Dearborn Heights.
According to Dearborn Heights police, a 46-year-old woman died Tuesday morning at a home on Huron Street, near Powers and Hanover Streets, on the city's south end.
"A neighbor tells us he heard a scream and then a gunshot, and then he watched first responders carry out a body bag," WWJ Newsradio 950's Darrylin Horne reported. "And then man allegedly responsible was placed in an ambulance."
There was a significant police presence in the area, and a 35-year-old man was rushed to a local hospital.
Police said that man is the suspect in the shooting, "was known to the victim," and had what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was listed in critical condition, but was expected to survived.
People living in the neighborhood said their morning began with the sound of gunshots coming from the house, just after 10- a.m., where the woman was inside with her children.
Neighbor Jim Fracassi, talking to Horne outside the home, said the woman who lived there had been dealing with a stalker for some time. He said the man had allegedly broken into the woman's home a couple of times.
It's not known exactly what their relationship was.
"Well, this has been ongoing for a while," Fracassi said. "He's assaulted her, he cut their swimming pool. I caught him sneaking around the creek several times, and I was asked by them if I see him call the police! Because he was just an ongoing threat."
As for what happened Tuesday, Fracassi surmised, "He was probably drunk, kicked in the door and decided... I think he probably premeditated this whole thing."
Horne said there was dried blood dotting the sidewalk outside the home.
No names have been released.
Police noted that this is believed to be an isolated domestic violence incident, with no threat to the public
.“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected by this senseless act of violence,” said Police Chief Mike Guzowski, in a statement, “Our officers responded quickly and did everything they could to save this victim’s life. This investigation remains active.”
