DETROIT (WWJ) - A woman is recovering after being shot while driving along I-94 on Detroit's east side with two children early Thursday morning, according to the Michigan State Police.
The woman called authorities to report the shooting.
Troopers found multiple bullet holes in the woman's vehicle, along with shell casings along the freeway, a Tweet from the MSP Second District said.
Authorities say the woman was hit by one of the bullets and taken to a local hospital.
She is in stable condition, will require additional surgery--and is expected to survive, MSP said.
"This is a mother driving home from spending Christmas with her family," First Lieutenant Mike Shaw said.
The two children were uninjured. Family members of the woman were contacted and came to pick up the children at the scene.
The freeway was closed while an investigation was conducted, but has since reopened.
"Currently, we don't know why the driver was shot at and do not have any information on the suspect or suspect vehicle," Shaw said.
The MSP Second District Freeway Investigative Support Team is currently investigating.
