DETROIT (WWJ) -- A woman has died after she was hit by a van along I-96 this morning, according to Michigan State Police.

Officials with the MSP Second District said a 911 call came in at around 7:30 a.m. Thursday from a person who spotted a pedestrian on the freeway, on Detroit's west side. While troopers were on their way to the scene, a second call came in reporting that the person on the freeway had been hit by a vehicle.

MSP said an investigation found a 39-year old woman had jumped from an overpass over the westbound lanes of the freeway, near Martin Luther King Blvd.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver involved did pull over and is cooperating with police, MSP said.

The westbound freeway was shut down after Michigan Ave. following the incident, but has since reopened to traffic.

A report by the Medical Examiner is pending.

The woman's name was not released.
