DETROIT (WWJ) A woman was killed and “multiple people” were injured in a wrong-way crash on I-96 on Detroit’s west side, police said.
In a social media statement; Michigan State Police (MSP) said Detroit Regional Communications Center started receiving calls about a driver of a sedan driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of the expressway on Sunday, January 12th around 3:15 a.m.
As troopers were on their way to the area; a call came in about a head-on crash near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
When they arrived, they saw both the sedan and a dark-colored SUV with “heavy-front-end damage.”
MSP said the SUV had six occupants who were rushed to two separate hospitals for treatment, after first responders rendered first aid to them at the scene. As of noon Sunday; MSP said they've been treated and would be released from the hospital soon.
The woman driving the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity was not released.
The freeway closed for about five hours for the investigation.
According to MSP, they are awaiting the medical examiner’s report to determine if she was impaired or had a medical condition.
