
PITTSFIELD TWP. (WWJ) -- An elderly woman was killed overnight by a stranger who broke into her Washtenaw County home, attacking her and her family.
Police said the horrific crime happened at around midnight Thursday in the 1900 block of Breckland Dr. in Pittsfield Township, which is south of Ann Arbor.
Pittsfield Township Police said its officers responded to the scene after a call came in about a home invasion and assault on residents.
Inside the home, police found two people suffering from life-threatening injuries. Both were rush to the hospital,
Lifesaving surgical efforts were performed on an 81-year-old woman, police said, but she didn't survive.
An 82-year-old man who was stabbed multiple times was listed in stable condition, police said. A dog in the house that was also attacked was taken to a local veterinary hospital for treatment of severe lacerations.
A preliminary investigation found there was a fight at different home in the area before the 40-year old suspect ran from that scene and broke into another home and attacked the victims.
Police said the suspect, a 40-year-old Pittsfield Township resident, did not know the victims.
The suspect was found nearby, arrested and booked in the Washtenaw County Jail. Charges are pending.
