HARRISON TWP. (WWJ) – A 27-year-old woman has died after an early morning fire at an apartment complex in Harrison Township that apparently started in the kitchen.
Firefighters were called to the Village Green on Lake St. Clair apartment complex after receiving reports of a fire shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday.
When crews showed up, flames were shooting out from a unit on the third floor.
As firefighters worked to put the blaze out, Macomb County Sheriff's deputies helped evacuate other residents in the building.
Firefighters pulled Taryn Gainey from the apartment and took her to the hospital with severe injuries. The woman died at the hospital, the sheriff's office said.
Nobody else was inside the unit at the time. Multiple families were displaced due to the fire, according to the sheriff's office.
Several residents inside the building were treated for minor smoke inhalation.
Officials say foul play is not expected and the cause of the fire was determined to be "cooking-related."
Selfridge ANG Fire Department and Clinton Township Fire Department assisted at the scene.
