DETROIT (WWJ) – A search is on for a suspect in a shooting at a drag race on a Detroit freeway early Sunday morning.
Detroit and Michigan State Police were called to westbound I-94 near Mt. Elliott on Detroit’s east side around 1:30 a.m. after getting reports of a shooting in the area.
Detroit police officers showed up and took a 28-year-old woman to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The woman told officers she was leaving an illegal drag racing event when someone in what is believed to be an orange car opened fire, according to MSP.
The victim said she was with a friend and a man driving a Black Dodge Charger. When shots were fired, her friend and the driver left the scene and did not go to the hospital, MSP officials said.
No other circumstances surrounding the incident have been released, including how many cars were involved in the drag race.
A check of local hospitals found two new gunshot victims, but neither were involved with the freeway shooting, according to MSP officials, who are still investigating and searching for other possible victims.
Anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or knows something about it to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
“This is another reminder that illegal events, such as drag racing, can lead to gun violence,” MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said on social media.
