(WWJ) – A woman who hit and killed a 22-year-old Michigan State University student in Oakland County on New Year’s Day before fleeing to Thailand has been sentenced to prison.
Back in June Tubtim "Sue" Howson pleaded guilty to charges of failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death in June.
Authorities say just before 6 a.m. Jan. 1, Howson hit and killed 22-year-old Benjamin Kable, who was walking on Rochester Road near Whims Lane in Oakland Township.
She then fled the scene of the crash. Two days later Howson, a dual citizen of Thailand and the U.S., fled the country and flew to Bangkok.
After tips from the community helped police identify Howson as the driver of the BMW that killed Kable, she was charged on Feb. 1.
When she returned to the U.S. in late February she was immediately taken into FBI custody.
On Wednesday Howson was sentenced to 1-5 years in prison, a sentence Oakland County Prosecutor said is “an important step in holding the individual responsible for this unimaginable act.”
“Losing a child is every parent’s worst nightmare,” McDonald said. “While today’s sentence will not fill the void left behind, I hope that it brings the family, friends, and loved ones of Ben Kable some level of solace.”
