Thousands of cars are rolling down Woodward Avenue today with the return of Dream Cruise after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Vintage cars, hot rods and classic cars are on display and even more people are lined up rows deep to watch. Overall, around 75,000 cars are expected to be on display today through 9 p.m.
People were already lining up on Friday for a good seat to watch the show.
“I love cars,” said one attendee who spoke with WWJ on-air. “I grew up in Detroit and I just can’t get enough of them.”
Others told us that they traveled from all over to attend the event, including Georgia.
Billed as one of the world’s largest one-day auto event, the cruise draws thousands of people from all over the U.S. and the world to nine cities in the Detroit metro area: Ferndale (home of Mustang Alley), Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge, Berkley, Royal Oak, Birmingham, Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Hills and Pontiac.
Pontiac Mayor Dierdre Waterman stopped by to chat with WWJ about the cruise this afternoon.
“Oh, it’s great,” she said “We’re cruising in Pontiac.” When asked by our host, Waterman said her favorite cars featured in the show were, of course, Pontiac. Others, including the Michigan Hot Rod Association, were interested in checking out a display of Chevrolet vehicles.
Apart from the car route along Woodward Avenue, the Dream Cruise features individual car shows that cover hot rods, classic cars and emergency vehicles as well as live music and entertainment.
