DETROIT (WWJ) – Michigan State Police investigators are working to identify two people who were inside the pickup truck that caused a wrong-way crash on I-94 in Detroit early Sunday morning.
The crash happened around 1 a.m., sending the driver of an SUV to the hospital with serious injuries, according to MSP.
Police began receiving 911 calls around 1 a.m. reporting a GMC pickup truck was driving east in the westbound lanes of the freeway near French Road on the city's east side.
Shortly after the calls came in, the pickup truck slammed head-on into a Ford Edge. The driver of the Ford was trapped inside and had to be extricated by Detroit Fire Department personnel.
The driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. That driver's identity has not been released.
The at-fault driver of the truck had possible injuries, while the passenger of the truck complained of pain. They were both taken to the hospital.
Both people used false identification with police, according to MSP.
MSP officials said the passenger did not speak English and did not cooperate with a Spanish translator.
A search warrant was sought to draw the at-fault driver's blood to determine whether they were intoxicated. The results have not been returned.
"The investigation is continuing to see if the at fault driver was impaired. We are also attempting to identify the driver. We are lucky all involved were wearing their seatbelts, or this could have ended a lot worse," MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said on social media.
