HOWELL (WWJ) -- A wrong-way driver caused a deadly overnight crash on I-96 between Howell and Lansing, according to authorities.
Early Friday morning, westbound I-96 was closed from Fowlerville Rd. (Exit 129) to M-52, the Webberville exit Exit 122) due to the incident.
The Ingham County Sheriff’s Office said, at around 1 a.m. on April 11, 911 calls started coming in about a driver who was heading eastbound in the westbound lanes of the freeway.
As deputies were responding, more callers said there was a crash near M-52, the Stockbridge exit.
The sheriff's office told WWJ Newsradio 950 that an innocent driver in the vehicle that was hit by the wrong-way driver was killed in the crash.
A passenger in that car was treated and released from a local hospital.
The wrong-way driver was also taken to a hospital, officials said. His condition is unknown at this time.
While the investigation is ongoing, officials said both alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the crash.
The names of the suspect and the person who died are both being withheld at this time, as officials work to notify their families.
The freeway reopened to traffic around the start of the morning commute.
