Wrong-way driver killed in crash on I-696 in Farmington Hills

FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) -- An early morning crash on I-696 near Orchard Lake road involved a driver going the wrong way on the freeway.

According to Farmington Hills Police, an 81-year old Detroit man died after his van crashed into an SUV, at around 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Investigators say the man was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes, near Halsted Road. It's unclear how he got into the wrong lanes.

The elderly man, found unresponsive after the crash, and was pronounced dead at the hospital. His name was not released.

The driver of the SUV had minor injuries and is expected to make a full recovery, police said.

An investigation by the Farmington Hills Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section is ongoing.
