DETROIT (WWJ) - A 56-year-old man driving in the wrong direction on M-10 in Detroit is dead after troopers say he crashed head-on into another driver, who spun out and hit a third car early Saturday morning.
Michigan State Police said the Lodge Freeway at Livernois was shutdown for four hours to investigate the fatal crash which occurred just before 1 a.m. on April 22.
According to their initial investigation, troopers determined a 56-year-old Detroit man behind the wheel of a Ford Fusion was driving north in the southbound lanes of the Lodge when he crashed into a 67-year-old woman driving a Mercedes sedan in the middle lane.
The force of the crash caused both vehicles to spin out of control, troopers added, with the Ford Fusion ending up on the concrete median barrier while the Mercedes crashed into a third vehicle traveling south on M-10.
The driver of the Ford was instantly killed, MSP said.

The 67-year-old woman in the Mercedes sustained serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital. The driver of the third vehicle was unhurt in the crash.
MSP Public Information Officer Mike Shaw said the incident leaves behind more questions than answers, including why the man was driving in the wrong direction to begin with.
“Currently, investigators have not been able to determine where or why the driver of the Ford entered the freeway the wrong way or if impaired driving is a factor," Shaw stated.
The investigation is ongoing at this time. Shaw said autopsy results on the deceased driver are pending. No other information was released.
